Published in npj Biosensing in December 2024, this study demonstrated how VICA™ can measure protein interactions without fluorescent or enzymatic labels.
VICA uses a specially prepared surface that changes colour as proteins bind. Researchers captured those changes with a camera and converted them into quantitative measurements, allowing them to see and measure binding on the same surface.
The team tested antibody binding, interactions between proteins and peptides, and the step-by-step assembly of protein complexes. Experiments included buffer, serum and whole blood, using commercially available antibodies.
For the interactions tested, VICA produced binding kinetics comparable to biolayer interferometry. In a separate experiment, measurements of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in fresh capillary blood closely tracked results from ELISA.
The work demonstrates how VICA can support research that asks both whether molecules bind and how they interact. Following successive binding steps on a single slide also gives researchers a way to investigate how larger protein complexes form.
