Computational discovery can generate candidates faster than teams can test them, while instrument costs and inflexible assays restrict the experiments many researchers can undertake. Pavonis is commercializing VICA™ to address that gap through flexible binding measurements, small-sample studies and a portable reader. The commercial opportunity is to serve teams that need experimental evidence but cannot justify the equipment, infrastructure or material required by their existing options.
Market
Pavonis’s August 2026 market analysis identifies a $4.55 billion North American research immunoassay market. Within that market, our initial focus is on emerging biotechnology companies, AI-driven antibody and peptide developers, CROs and academic researchers whose work is constrained by cost, sample availability or access to instruments. A Pavonis-run study gives those teams experimental measurements without a capital purchase and gives Pavonis a route to paid work around an immediate research need.
As AI design produces more candidates, the need to compare their binding creates further demand for experimental testing. VICA™ supports that work through small-sample studies in selected solid-phase and solution-phase formats, allowing teams to investigate more options before committing material to detailed characterization.
Commercial model
Get binding measurements for a defined research question without purchasing an instrument, then commission further studies as needed.
Paid pilot and service engagements, with opportunities for follow-on studies.
Continue testing with an assay developed for an established application, building on the value demonstrated in earlier studies.
Kits are in development to support continued testing and repeat purchases.
Run established VICA™ assays in the customer’s own research setting, with the supplies needed for ongoing testing.
Hardware sales create opportunities for recurring reagent and slide purchases.
The research market provides the starting point for expansion into agricultural and other applications. Field studies demonstrate how assays can be adapted to another setting, while new medical and clinical applications require their own development and validation.
Progress
Publications in npj Biosensing, Molecular Pharmaceutics and Nature Communications describe VICA™ methods and selected research applications.
9Bio progressed from a VICA™ pilot to paid work with Pavonis.
A VICA™ platform is installed at MolScreen.
Technology
VICA™ makes binding visible through an optical change at an engineered surface. A camera-based reader records that response, allowing the platform to use compact readout equipment for selected interaction measurements. The materials science and manufacturing expertise behind the surface are central to that approach.
For the customer, this design combines experimental flexibility with portability. For Pavonis, it creates opportunities to serve both laboratories seeking affordable access and research teams that need to measure samples in the field. The same platform can support different assays as applications are developed.
Team and IP
Todd McMullen brings the discovery-research experience that defined the problem VICA™ addresses. Robert Burrell, inventor of ACTICOAT™ and holder of more than 300 patents worldwide, contributes the materials and manufacturing expertise needed to build the platform. Aaryn Flynn brings a technology commercialization record exceeding $100 million. Together, their experience spans the scientific need, product development and commercial execution.
The VICA™ platform combines a substrate, chemistry and reader, supported by the team’s materials engineering and manufacturing know-how. Investors can discuss the intellectual property covering those components and the company’s development priorities directly with Pavonis.
Investment priorities
Commercial growth depends on reaching suitable customers, delivering repeatable studies and developing products for continuing use.VICA™ is currently operated manually for selected research studies; automated thousand-compound screening and specialist low-picomolar measurements require other capabilities.
Reach suitable customers and build relationships that lead to further studies.
Develop capacity to support products for continuing customer use.
Develop the software needed for expansion, including cloud analytics.
